Book Excerpts: Caspian

Caspian: Book 1

He ran down the hill, knowing that they were right behind him. He broke through the tree line, kicking up dust and then suddenly he was sliding toward the camp below. I made it! He said in a false victory. Then he saw a girl practicing with her friend. A familiar girl. She’s alive! But how? He thought and then the flashback started.

The gorgeous girl lay in his arms, nearly dead. The shadow touch was creeping out from her back to the rest of her body.
“Abby.” He managed to croak out. The blackness crept down her arms.
“Caspian.” She said. The shadow was up to her neck now. She touched his cheek, then fell limp in his arms. “Caspian.”

A growl behind him broke Caspian out of his nightmare. He turned to see Dustjerk and his dustwolf acquaintances, Dustface and Dustbutt. Those weren't their real names, but that was what he had figured they should be called when they started attacking him the night that...Abby...Abby… He started to return to his flashback, but then jumped back to attention. Focus.
Dustface and Dustbutt attacked first, and then Dustjerk. Then something weird happened. After Caspian quickly dispersed the first two, Dust Jerk went back over the ledge.
“Wha--” He started to say, but stopped at a brick wall. Caspian tried to talk, but his voice ran away without him. He saw the 10, no, 20, no 30 Dust wolves that waited there.
They all attacked at once.

Caspian was unsure of what to do. Actually, that was an understatement. He was totally freaking out. When his fear overpowered his male instinct to hold his ground and fight, Caspian turned to his next option. Run!
He was almost to the nearby camp when he tripped over a torch laying on the ground. What the freak? He thought to himself as he flew over the edge, only to find that his bruised and bloody hands had caught onto the top of the precipice. Caspian then did the worst thing anyone could ever do in that situation. He looked down.
Thousands of tons of water burst out of the opening, forty feet below him. It rushed and surged, carving tunnels through the earth. Caspian looked up again. The shadow-bred dustwolves were a few seconds away from causing his impending doom. He glanced at the deadly waterfall and river.
"Thanks, guys," He said to the dustwolf pack. "But I'll take my chances." With that final sentence, he fell.

Book Excerpts: Bianca

Bianca: Book 1

Bianca felt so much sorrow coming back to the Ochre Bridge. She remembered that night so clearly.
It was the night that her best guy friend told her that he liked her. She had a major crush on him too. When he told her that, she was floating on cloud nine. She could hardly keep her smile from splitting her face in half. That was when the Shadows took him. She had a hope that when they got to the Shadow camp, she would be able to find him as well as Dave. They were the closest people to her heart. It was her Shadow curse. They were told that they had to go to the Ochre Bridge. A note fell from the sky saying that they needed to go to the bridge if they wanted to save their friend. Bianca had thought that this meant Dave or Zoe. Even through all of Bianca’s pleadings, Alyssa and Caspian decided that they wanted to go, despite her concerns, so Bianca decided to go with them so that she wouldn't be ambushed if she had decided to stay. When they got to the bridge she felt so much heartache. She remembered the night so clear as if it had happened yesterday.
“His name is Toby.” Bianca explained to them. “He was my best friend, until he told me he liked me, then we were technically boyfriend and girlfriend, and that is when the Shadows took him. That was when I vowed to find him, no matter what.” Bianca told them when they reached the bridge. A tear trickled down her face. She wiped it away quickly. She hoped they didn't see it. She was supposed to be strong, not a sissy who cries when her emotions get the better of her.
“Well we’re here. Where’s our supposed friend?” Caspian asked impatiently. It seemed as if the air were growing colder, like an evil force were working about. The air started to get warmer right as she was thinking that. Suddenly a dragon appeared from under the bridge. She had a rider on her back. They landed and the rider got off. He had a hoodie on with the hood covering his face. When he took his hood off, Bianca almost screamed. It was Toby. His eyes lit up as he realized it was Bianca. She ran to him and he opened his arms so that he could embrace her. He spun her in a circle and then set her on her feet.
"Where have you been?"

Book Excerpts: Alyssa

Alyssa: Book 1

Alyssa grumbled as she trudged through the gray sludge that soaked through her boots like water on a paper towel. She had donned several layers, the basic essentials. Two long-sleeve shirts, three jackets, one sweatshirt, and finally a nice, cozy winter coat. Yet she was still frozen to the bone. It must be the magic around here. I really wish I knew how strong it was before I came.  She turned around to face Bianca.
“How far do you think it is?” Alyssa yelled against the wind. Bianca, who was, as usual, zoned out, replied.
“What?”
“Are you actually paying attention this time?”
“Maybe. It depends on if you are willing to talk to me. So, what did you say the first time?” Bianca squinted up at her. Alyssa glared back, then turned around.
“Okay, missy. I don’t know if this is just the dark magic, or your natural nature, but you’ll definitely have to learn to control that temper of yours, or we’ll never survive. None of us. We need you Lyssie. don’t abuse the fact.” She gestured at the rest of the company. Mop looked up and waved at her, then went back to helping the others up the steep path.
“Fine. I just asked how far the freaking castle thingy was. But if you had just been listening-”
“Ah, ah, ah.” Bianca cut in, reminding Alyssa of her anger issue. “And we’re about halfway from the bottom, where we started, OK?”
“Halfway, huh? But the castle…” And then her accelerated brain’s gears started turning. What if the sky was just an illusion? She reached her gloved hand up in the air, and a flaming arrow nearly took it off. It hit a pigeon and landed at her feet. Alyssa grinned.
“Hey, guys. We should set up camp here. I think I just invented dinner.”
